Dhenkanal: At least five persons died in a tragic accident when a car carrying wedding guests plunged into a pond near Indipur in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district.
The five deceased have been identified as Ram Sahoo (25), Abinash Sahoo (26), Rakesh Kumar Sahoo (25), Chandrakanta Swain (27), and a maternal cousin of the groom.
According to sources, the car was carrying guests of the groom, Abhishek Sahoo, the son of Santosh Kumar Sahoo of Bangursingh village.
Abhishek was travelling to Indipur village of Dhenkanal Sadar block for his wedding with the daughter of Rohit Kumar Prusty.
When the groom’s procession was moving to the wedding venue, one of the cars, a XUV Mahindra carrying guests, reached Chhainpur and took two more passengers before moving towards Indipur.
On a dark road, the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle and the car slipped off the road, tumbling down into a pond.
Sources revealed that seven persons were travelling in the car, including two guests who managed to survive.
However, five drowned inside the sunken car.
The villagers immediately reached the spot and retrieved the car from the pond.
Soon after receiving the information, Dhenkanal Sadar police arrived at the spot and recovered the bodies which were sent to the Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital for postmortem.
A case has been registered and an investigation is underway to ascertain the reason behind the accident.
The ghastly incident has cast a pall of sorrow in Bangursingh and Indipur villages.
