Due to today’s poor eating habits and stressful lifestyle, stomach diseases are spreading rapidly. One of these very serious and painful conditions is ‘Ulcerative Colitis’, which is a type of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). A person suffering from this disease has to face serious problems like constant swelling in the stomach, cramps, frequent loose motions and bleeding in the stool. Gastroenterologists believe that along with medicines, your diet plays a big role in this disease. If you do not improve your diet in time and do not stay away from certain things, your health can deteriorate rapidly. Let us know about those 12 things which ulcerative colitis patients should avoid immediately. 1. Excessively spicy and spicy food: If you suffer from stomach inflammation or colitis, then immediately stay away from dishes made with red chillies, green chillies and spicy spices. Spicy food burns the inner lining of the intestines (Mucosa) badly, due to which the problem of bleeding and pain can become more serious. 2. Milk and dairy products (lactose) Sometimes ulcerative colitis patients have difficulty digesting lactose. Consuming milk, cheese, butter and cheese increases the problem of gas, bloating and loose motion in the intestines, hence opt for plant-based milk. 3. Deep fried and junk food: Deep fried items like samosas, kachoris, burgers and French fries are very heavy to digest. The unhealthy fats present in these further provoke gut inflammation, due to which the digestive system completely breaks down. 4. Caffeinated Drinks (Tea, Coffee and Soda) Immediately give up the habit of drinking excessive tea, coffee or energy drinks. Caffeine irritates the intestines, which increases the problem of diarrhea and stomach cramps. 5. Artificial Sweeteners and Cold Drinks: Diet drinks and sugar-free products available in the market contain chemicals and artificial sweeteners which destroy the good bacteria of the stomach. This causes severe problems like flatulence and gas. 6. Refined flour (maida) and things made from it: The amount of fiber in bread, biscuits and noodles made from flour is absolutely zero. These stick to the intestines and worsen the cycle of constipation or loose motions, putting extra pressure on the intestines. 7. Pulses like beans, chickpeas and urad dal: Although legumes are good for health, but in the active phase of ulcerative colitis, eating pulses like kidney beans, chickpeas and urad produces a lot of gas and the problem of flatulence becomes serious. 8. Raw vegetables and salads: Salad is considered good for health, but in ulcerative colitis, raw vegetables (like cabbage, cucumber, radish) are very difficult for the intestines to digest. Always eat vegetables by boiling or steaming them. 9. Packaged and Preservative Foods Packaged soups, sauces and chips contain dangerous chemicals and preservatives which deepen the intestinal ulcers. It is wise to always maintain distance from them. 10. Alcohol & Smoking: Consumption of alcohol and cigarettes directly damages the digestive system and intestinal cells. This prevents the ulcer from healing and takes the disease to a dangerous level. 11. Gluten-containing grains (wheat and barley) often increase intestinal inflammation due to gluten sensitivity. If you feel severe stomach discomfort after eating wheat, then adopt a gluten-free diet with the advice of your doctor. 12. Fruits with seeds and peels The seeds of guava, tomato or cucumber can get stuck in parts of the intestines where ulcers or inflammation are already present. This can increase pain and bleeding, so always eat the fruit after removing the seeds and peel. Doctors in gastro hospitals in big cities like Lucknow, Delhi and Mumbai also advise patients to strictly follow these rules.
