According to a BBC report, 1 gram of genuine Da Hong Pao can cost around $1,400 i.e. around ₹1.2 lakh. According to weight, it is considered many times more valuable than gold. If a small kettle is prepared from this real tea, its price can be more than ₹ 8 lakh.

Where to find genuine Da Hong Pao tea?

Seeing the increasing demand and historical importance of this tea, the Chinese government took a big decision in 2006. The government permanently banned the plucking of tea leaves from these six original trees. Now these trees have been preserved as cultural heritage of China. Tea leaves are not plucked commercially from here. Not only this, the Chinese government has also insured these trees for about ₹ 142 crore. The last tea leaves extracted from these trees are still preserved in the Palace Museum in Beijing.

What is Da Hong Pao available in the market?

If you buy Da Hong Pao in the market today, it is not made from the leaves of real Mother Trees. Da Hong Pao sold today is either made from cloned plants of the same original trees or mixed with special Wuyi Oolong tea in an attempt to get as close to the taste as possible. Da Hong Pao is famous not only for its price but also because of an old story. It is said that several hundred years ago a student was going to Beijing to take an examination. On the way he fell seriously ill. A monk from a nearby temple gave him a special tea that grows on the mountain. After drinking the tea he completely recovered and topped the examination. After some time, when the Emperor of China fell ill, the same student served him the same tea. The emperor also recovered. Pleased, the emperor presented him his red royal robe. That student put that red robe on those tea trees as a mark of respect. Since then this tea was named Da Hong Pao i.e. Big Red Robe.
