Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has expanded his investment portfolio by backing SolarSquare, a leading rooftop solar startup in India. Along with investing through his family office, Midas Deals, Dhoni has also come on board as the company's brand ambassador, signalling his support for the country's rapidly growing clean energy sector.
While the company has not disclosed the size of Dhoni's investment, it confirmed that his participation is part of its recently completed Series C funding round, which raised $53 million (around ₹510 crore).
Part of a Major Funding RoundThe funding round was led by existing investor Lightspeed, with participation from Lowercarbon Capital, Rainmatter, and Good Capital. According to the company, Dhoni's association reflects growing confidence in the long-term potential of India's residential rooftop solar market.
The fresh capital will be used to accelerate the company's expansion plans and strengthen its technology and customer service capabilities.
Expansion Across IndiaSolarSquare plans to use the new funding to expand into 30 to 40 additional cities over the coming years. The company also intends to:
- Strengthen its technology platform.
- Offer easier financing options for homeowners.
- Improve installation and after-sales services.
- Expand its workforce to support future growth.
Founded in 2015 by Shreya Mishra, Neeraj Jain, and Nikhil Nahar, SolarSquare initially focused on commercial and industrial solar projects before entering the residential rooftop solar segment in 2021.
Today, the startup provides end-to-end services, including:
- Solar consultation
- System design
- Installation
- Financing assistance
- Performance monitoring
- Maintenance and after-sales support
The company says it has installed rooftop solar systems in more than 50,000 homes across 29 Indian cities. To date, SolarSquare has raised over $100 million in funding and has achieved an annual revenue run rate of nearly ₹1,000 crore.
India's Rooftop Solar Sector Gains MomentumIndia's residential rooftop solar market has been expanding rapidly, driven by rising electricity costs, government incentives, and increasing awareness of renewable energy. SolarSquare estimates that nearly 70 million homes across the country have the potential to install rooftop solar systems.
Industry analysts believe India's broader clean technology sector could grow into a $152 billion market by 2030, making it one of the country's fastest-growing industries.
Dhoni's Growing Startup PortfolioSolarSquare marks Dhoni's third startup investment in 2026. Earlier this year, he invested in startups including Kuku and LightFury Games, reflecting his growing interest in India's startup ecosystem.
Dhoni is also among several Indian cricketers investing in emerging businesses. Rohit Sharma has partnered with fitness startup Fittr, Ajinkya Rahane has invested in footwear brand Chupps, and Riyan Parag has backed deep-tech startup Proxgy.
