New Delhi: A 35-year-old police personnel was shot dead after suspected terrorists opened fire on a police team in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag on Wednesday. The firing happened around 12:30 pm at Lal Chowk in the city.
A head constable posted in the area was reportedly injured in the gunfire and was rushed to a hospital. Though the injured police personnel was moved to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Anantnag, almost immediately after being shot he was declared brought dead by the doctors there.
The security forces have cordoned off the entire area where the firing took place. They have also launched a search operation to track down the terrorists.
A report in NDTV said that the police party which was attacked by terrorists was deployed to maintain security during the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. The deceased has been identified as Aashiq Hussain Qureshi.
Apart from Anantnag, security has also been tightened in other parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Resistance Front, a shadow outfit of the Lashkar-e-Toiba has claimed responsibility for the attack. Security forces are on high alert following the attack. They have been deployed in Anantnag for the Amarnath Yatra, though the pilgrimage has remained suspended for the past 4 days now, due to heavy rainfall in the Union Territory.
