ITR Filing Deadline Changed: July 31, 2026 is not the last date for every taxpayer. Know who can file income tax return by 31st August or 31st October.
ITR Deadline Big Update: If you are assuming that July 31, 2026 is the last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR), then definitely check your category once. This deadline is not the same for every taxpayer. Some people will get a chance to file ITR till 31 August 2026. The special thing is that if you have traded in Intraday Trading or F&O (Futures & Options) even just once in the last financial year, then the deadline of your ITR may change. Let us know who will get extra time and for whom the deadline of July 31 is still there...
Has the last date of ITR changed for all people?
No. The August 31 deadline does not apply to every taxpayer. If your income is only from salary, pension or general investments and does not include income from business or profession, different rules may apply to you. But people whose income falls in the category of business or profession and who do not need to undergo tax audit, can file ITR till 31 August 2026.
What if I have made only one Intraday or F&O trade?
Many people trade in the stock market only once or twice a year and think that it will not make any difference. But as per tax rules, if you have done intraday trading even once or any trade in F&O, your income can be considered as business income. In such a situation, your ITR deadline may be 31st August instead of 31st July, provided your case does not come under the purview of tax audit.
What do the tax rules say on Intraday and F&O?
Profit or loss from intraday trading is considered speculative business income. It is taxed as per the normal tax slab. Whereas, Future and Option (F&O) trading is considered as Non-Speculative Business Income. There is no delivery of shares in this, yet under the Income Tax Act it is kept in the category of business income.
