Fernando Santos has heaped praise on Bernardo Silva, describing the Portuguese playmaker as "a phenomenon by every measure" and asserting that Real Madrid have secured a world-class talent. The former Portugal coach believes Silva’s intelligence and skill set place him among the finest footballers globally.

In an interview with the Spanish daily "AS", Santos elaborated on Silva’s personal and technical brilliance. “As a footballer, everyone already knows his quality. He has an extraordinary understanding of the game that very few players in the world possess. His ability level is exceptional, but what makes him stand out even more is that he is equally remarkable as a person. He is caring, polite, kind, and always smiling. On a personal and human level, he is one of the best players I have ever worked with. Real Madrid have signed a phenomenon in every sense.”

When asked what distinguishes Silva on the pitch, Santos was clear: “His intelligence is his greatest asset. Technically, he’s superb, and tactically, he’s exceptional. He reads the game with precision and always knows what to do with the ball, as well as how to position himself when he doesn’t have it. I used him as a midfielder, playmaker, and winger, and he delivered outstanding performances in every role.”

At 31, many might wonder if Silva remains at his peak. Santos dismissed any doubt. “Based on what I’ve seen from him this season with Manchester City, I can confidently say yes. I know him very well and I’m certain he still has several top-level years ahead. He’s still at the peak of his career and will continue to prove it. For me, he remains one of the best players in the world, and Real Madrid made the right decision signing him. He’ll be a huge addition to their squad.”

Discussing Silva’s potential role alongside Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, and Jude Bellingham, Santos said: “Top players know how to adapt to different match situations. Bernardo is excellent in that regard and will easily fit wherever he’s needed. I’m sure José Mourinho already has a clear idea of how to use him, and Bernardo will execute that role brilliantly.”

Santos expects Silva to hold his own in Real Madrid’s star-studded attack. “He’s accustomed to competition, and his quality ensures he’ll earn his place in the starting eleven. I think he’ll play a crucial role — that’s exactly why Mourinho wanted him. He may operate more on the right wing or occasionally through the middle, but wherever he’s placed, his tactical understanding and game reading will make him excel. Mourinho is a clever coach with deep strategic insight, and he’ll bring out the best in Bernardo.”

When asked whether Silva could drop deeper to help build play, Santos replied confidently: “With his game intelligence and technical excellence, he can certainly do that. We saw glimpses of it against Uzbekistan when he partnered Bruno Fernandes in central midfield. Alongside a more central midfielder, he can perfectly organise the team’s play, though I still believe he’s most effective when closer to the opponent’s goal.”

On the defensive side, Santos had no concerns. “He proved his defensive commitment at Manchester City. Though he might not look physically imposing, he’s full of energy on the pitch and always works for the team. He never hesitates to run, and often wins the ball back thanks to his positioning sense and anticipation.”

Comparing Silva to Croatian legend Luka Modric, Santos said: “I don’t like comparing players too much because each has his own traits, but yes, there are similarities in their style. They both share two key qualities — exceptional technical skill and total dedication to the team.”

After two underwhelming seasons, Real Madrid supporters will have high expectations, but Santos believes Silva will handle the pressure with ease. “That won’t be an issue for him. He’s experienced, has played for top clubs, and knows how to handle the pressure and demands that come with representing Real Madrid. Bernardo will live up to the responsibility.”

Concluding his remarks, Santos said: “I’m fully convinced this transfer will be a success. Real Madrid fans, who are knowledgeable and accustomed to watching the world’s best, will love Bernardo Silva. He won’t disappoint and will exceed expectations.
