danger of fake jewelery
It is believed that long-term use of imitation jewelry such as necklaces, rings and earrings may increase the risk of cancer. A recent study has revealed that the amount of cadmium in some online jewelery has been found to be 9,000 times more than the standard. This matter came to light in the UK, where cadmium or lead was mixed in fake jewellery. While the maximum limit for cadmium has been set at 0.01%, the test results were shocking. Nowadays online shopping has become an important part of life, which includes everyday essentials like groceries and medicines, and also jewellery. But adulteration in these jewelery increases the risk of cancer. Let us know about this research.
Research findings
One report mentions excess cadmium in counterfeit jewellery. It found that the amount of cadmium in rings, necklaces and earrings being sold on several popular online platforms was 9,000 times the standard. According to UK regulations, the amount of cadmium in imitation jewelery should not exceed 0.01%.
According to this standard, if a product is sold as “925 silver” (ie 92.5% silver), it may contain high amounts of the toxic metal. In one case, a ring sold as “925 silver” was found to contain 92% cadmium. Similarly, the amount of cadmium in one bracelet was 3,300 times the standard. These products were recalled after testing, but the scope of this type of adulteration is worrying.
Cancer and other health problems
According to the UK Health Security Agency, long-term exposure to cadmium can not only cause cancer but also increases the risk of kidney and liver- diseases. Professor Christer Hoogstrand of King’s College London said that heavy metals can cause kidney cancer. Apart from this, they can damage the liver as well as cause osteoporosis, which makes the bones weak and brittle.
Dangers of Fake Jewelry
The report also states that jewelry like earrings are more dangerous. The reason for this is that after piercing these ears come in direct contact with the skin, due to which toxic metals can enter the body. Experts say that due to the widespread use of artificial jewelery in India, the risk of heavy metal pollution has become a matter of serious concern.
