Chelsea have introduced their newest signing, France international Melvine Malard, in what marks a club-record transfer fee received by Manchester United. The forward reunites with Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor, with whom she previously worked at Lyon. Malard’s arrival is expected to boost Chelsea’s attacking options following several key departures, most notably that of Sam Kerr.

The move, which had been widely reported the previous week, was officially confirmed on Monday. While different outlets have provided varying figures, it is understood that Chelsea paid a minimum of £750,000 ($1m) for the 26-year-old, who has signed a four-year contract with the London club. Reports also suggest the total could rise to between £850,000 ($1.13m) and £1m ($1.33m), depending on performance-based add-ons.

Even at the lower end of those valuations, Malard becomes one of the 11 most expensive signings in the history of women’s football. Although losing such a key player is a setback for Manchester United, the financial return makes the deal understandable from their perspective, especially considering Chelsea’s status as a direct Women’s Super League rival.

Speaking after her transfer was confirmed, Malard said: “I’m so happy because I have a plan for my life and my career, and Chelsea were always part of that plan. It’s a great club with huge ambition, and I’m really excited to get started. I’ve faced Chelsea many times and never won, so I know how strong the team is. I’ve known Sonia since I was 14 years old, so working with her again feels amazing.”

Malard Strengthens Chelsea Attack After Kerr’s Departure and Missed Targets

Bompastor first discovered Malard while managing at Lyon and played a key role in bringing the young forward—who was born and raised on the island of Reunion, east of Madagascar—to France to join Lyon’s academy. Bompastor later coached her in the first team, taking over as head coach in 2021, four years after Malard made her senior debut.

This longstanding relationship and belief in Malard’s potential likely influenced Chelsea’s willingness to invest heavily in her. The forward impressed at Manchester United after joining from Lyon in 2023, though her statistical output did not fully reflect her influence on the pitch.

With Chelsea’s front line weakened by the departures of Kerr and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd during the summer window—and Catarina Macario and Guro Reiten having left earlier—the club’s need for attacking reinforcements became urgent. Malard, who has primarily played as a winger but is also capable of leading the line, offers versatility and experience. She will wear the No.9 shirt for Chelsea, as she did at United.

Chelsea had actively pursued several other forwards during this transfer window, including Khadija Shaw, who renewed her contract with Manchester City, Felicia Schroder, who joined Real Madrid, and Salma Paralluelo, who remains a free agent after leaving Barcelona. Whether Malard will be used centrally or out wide remains to be seen, but her addition provides Bompastor with valuable tactical options in attack.

United had hoped to extend Malard’s contract, which was due to expire next summer, but were unable to reach an agreement.
