Himachal Rain Alert: The torrential rains in Himachal Pradesh are wreaking havoc. Life went haywire due to heavy rain on Tuesday. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in Kangra, Chamba and Sirmaur.

Shimla: Incessant monsoon rains in Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday have badly affected the normal life. Due to heavy rains, there are problems in roads, electricity and drinking water supply. Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'red alert' for Kangra, Chamba and Sirmaur districts. The department has warned of heavy to very heavy rain in these areas and torrential rain at some places.

South-west monsoon is fully active in the state. IMD has warned that due to heavy rains, flash floods, landslides and waterlogging may occur in sensitive areas.

Minister told how nature wreaked havoc in Himachal

Speaking to ANI, Himachal Pradesh Revenue, Horticulture and Tribal Development Minister Jagat Singh Negi said that despite the red alert, the damage was not as big as feared. However, he acknowledged that there have been reports of flash floods and landslides from many districts.
According to the minister, 145 roads are still closed in the state due to incessant rains, 508 power distribution transformers (DTRs) are not working and 43 drinking water supply schemes have been affected.
Negi said that the flash floods in Lahaul-Spiti and some other districts have damaged the bridges and link roads built on small drains, making transportation difficult in many areas.
He further said that in the month of July, 66 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh. The reasons for these deaths are road accidents, landslides and falling of rocks.
"The government is closely monitoring the situation and all concerned departments are engaged in relief and rescue operations," he said.

Avoid traveling in Himachal

The minister also informed that district administrations and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMA) have been instructed to remain on high alert and take all necessary precautionary measures. Officials have also advised people to avoid non-essential travel to sensitive areas and strictly follow the warnings of the weather department, especially in the districts where red alert is in place.
