The global football fraternity is in mourning following the passing of Kevin Keegan at the age of 75 earlier this afternoon.

The former Newcastle United, Liverpool and England legend left an indelible mark on every club he represented, both as a player and as a manager. His influence has sparked an outpouring of emotion and tributes from former teams, colleagues, and friends across the sport.

Among those leading the tributes was ex-Newcastle striker Alan Shearer, who grew up idolising Keegan from the Gallowgate End at St James' Park before later joining the Magpies to play under his childhood hero.

In a heartfelt message, Shearer wrote: "My Hero. My Manager. My friend. Sleep easy Boss."

Former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given also paid his respects, sharing: "It’s hard to put into words what this man meant to me, an unbelievable player and manager but most importantly an incredible human being. The world has lost one of the greatest."

Keegan’s former clubs have also shared their condolences. Liverpool, where he secured three First Division titles, a European Cup, an FA Cup, and two UEFA Cups, stated: "His indomitable spirit and remarkable contribution will be forever etched in our history and his legacy will live on."

Newcastle United described Keegan as "more than a legendary footballer and manager" and "the beating heart of Newcastle United for generations of supporters," adding that the club is "carefully considering how we shape a lasting tribute to Kevin’s remarkable life and legacy."

Hamburger SV, where Keegan lifted the Bundesliga title and won two consecutive European Player of the Year awards, said they will "always cherish the memory of our former title-winning player and two-time Ballon d’Or winner." Manchester City, a club he managed for four years, called him "a transformative manager who brought optimism and vibrancy to City."

Keegan also represented and managed the England national team, with the Football Association expressing that they were "incredibly saddened by the news that Kevin Keegan has passed away." A tribute to Keegan is set to take place at Wembley Stadium when England host Spain in the Nations League this September.

Further tributes have been shared from across the football community. Veteran commentator Martin Tyler reflected: "Whenever you were given the chance to cover a Newcastle game as a commentator, you knew you were in for a rollercoaster of an evening. It was always special being in his company. He never disappointed. Never."

Former Newcastle defender Warren Barton added: "He made you feel like the best player in the world. For me, I owe him everything." Newcastle United have invited supporters wishing to pay tribute to leave flowers, scarves, and other mementos at the South West Corner of St James’ Park. A book of condolence will also be opened, and the launch of the club’s new away kit has been postponed until Friday in light of the news.
