The future of Algerian footballer Riyad Mahrez remains clouded with uncertainty.
The winger is facing a difficult phase in his career. Having bid farewell to the 2026 World Cup earlier than expected, Mahrez now finds himself without a club and unsure of his next destination.
What’s the background?
Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli surprised Mahrez while he was with the Algerian national team at the 2026 World Cup, ending his contract abruptly despite it being valid until June 2027.
The decision came as a shock, especially since the club had reportedly agreed to extend his contract for an additional year before his departure to the United States. Algerian media heavily criticised Al-Ahli’s management for the move, accusing them of disregarding the significance of the global tournament for their star player.
Now aged 35 and a free agent, Mahrez was recently linked with Italian club Como. However, that speculation has now been officially dismissed.
Como respond to Riyad Mahrez rumours
Sports outlet "winwin" reached out directly to Como’s sporting director Carlo Alberto Ludi to verify the reports connecting the club with the Algerian international.
Ludi categorically denied any interest in signing Mahrez. He stated, “No, we are not interested in signing the Algerian during the current summer transfer window.”
Mahrez’s stint in Saudi Arabia
The Algerian star, often referred to as the son of the country of a million martyrs, joined Al-Raqi (Al-Ahli) in the summer of 2023 after a €35 million transfer from Manchester City. His contract, initially set to run until 2027, was suddenly terminated a few weeks ago.
Al-Ahli will not face any sanctions for ending the deal, as the contract included a clause allowing the club to terminate it unilaterally within a specific time frame before June 2026, which they adhered to.
During his time with Al-Raqi, Mahrez featured in 122 games, scoring 37 goals and providing 50 assists. His achievements include consecutive AFC Champions League Elite titles and a Saudi Super Cup victory.
What lies ahead for Mahrez?
Although nothing has been finalised, several media outlets report that Mahrez has multiple offers under consideration. His potential suitors include Chicago Fire from the United States, Al-Uroba from Saudi Arabia, Al-Sadd from Qatar, Fenerbahce from Turkey, and Le Havre from France. Additionally, Italian club Atalanta and English side Coventry City have also been mentioned as possible destinations.
