New Delhi. Argentina captain Lionel Messi thanked fans in an emotional message, a day after they lost 0-1 to Spain in extra time in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.
Messi said that the pain of this defeat is very deep and it will take time to heal this wound, but he is proud of the fight that the team put up throughout the tournament.
Spain won the World Cup title by defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time in the final played in New Jersey. After the match, Messi was seen crying emotionally and speculations about his international future also intensified.
In a message written in Spanish on Instagram, Messi said, “This pain is very deep and it will take time to heal.
But I will also cherish all those good moments… those matches that we came back and won, in which we gave our all. Those moments will always remain in our memories.
The support of the entire country, and the hard work and dedication of this team, have once again placed us among the best teams in the world.”
He further added, “Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you who wished us and sent us messages. Once again we were able to unite the entire country and together we felt the pride of being Argentinian.”
Messi also congratulated Spain in his message and said, “I also want to heartily congratulate Spain for this championship.”
Messi’s great contribution to the national team
Inter Miami’s star player Messi made Argentina the world champion by defeating France in the 2022 World Cup final.
Apart from this, he also made the team win two consecutive Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024. During this World Cup, Messi took his number of international goals to 125, which is less than only Cristiano Ronaldo (146 goals).
In the World Cup 2026, Messi scored eight goals and four assists. He also became the first player in World Cup history to start three final matches, although this time he could not lead the team to victory against Spain.
On the other hand, Argentine Football Association (AFA) President Claudio Tapia also praised Messi’s extraordinary services and contribution to the national team and remembered him in respectful words.
