The Southwest Monsoon has intensified across the Indian subcontinent. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a high-level weather bulletin for July 21, 2026, placing the northern hill states of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir on a Red Alert for extremely heavy rainfall. Concurrently, orange and yellow alerts cover more than 21 states across North, East, and Central India, warning of localised flooding, landslips, and severe lightning strikes.
According to meteorologists, the sharp surge in rainfall intensity is driven by the simultaneous activity of over eight cyclonic circulations and active trough lines spanning from the Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal, creating a synchronised deluge across key river basins.
Hill States on Maximum Vigilance: Cloudburst and Landslide Risk
The IMD’s highest level of warning instructs disaster response authorities and local administrations in Himachal Pradesh and the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir (including Ladakh) to remain prepared.
Himachal Pradesh (Red Alert): Districts including Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Kullu, and Sirmaur face extreme downpours capable of triggering flash floods, mudslides, and sudden river surges.
Jammu & Kashmir (Red Alert): Torrential downpours are expected across multiple valleys, creating elevated risk profiles near vulnerable slopes and river catchments.
Uttarakhand (Orange Alert): Devbhoomi Uttarakhand remains on high alert with severe rain warnings, prompting administrative precautionary steps, including school closures in disaster-prone pockets like Dehradun.

As the monsoon trough shifts steadily over the Gangetic plains, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast across 11 major states and Union Territories:
Uttar Pradesh & Bihar: Continuous torrential spells with frequent cloud-to-ground lightning are expected across eastern and western districts.
Delhi-NCR, Punjab & Haryana: Increased moisture feed will trigger scattered heavy downpours accompanied by thunderstorms, bringing welcome relief from summer heat but inducing localised traffic logging.
Northeast Corridor: Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura face active monsoon bursts with risks of localised slope instability.
Peninsular & Coastal Belts: High-volume precipitation continues across Konkan & Goa and Central Maharashtra, while gusty winds touching 40 to 50 km/h are projected across Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka.
Disaster management authorities have advised residents in vulnerable hilly terrains and low-lying plains to minimise non-essential travel, avoid approaching fast-flowing streams, and follow real-time district advisories.
