Padma Vibhushan awarded famous dancer and former Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Sonal Mansingh has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that great artists of Indian classical dance should also be awarded the country’s highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’. He said that the contribution of dance art is equal to that of music and it should get due respect.
Knews Desk- Sonal Mansingh has written a letter to the Prime Minister suggesting the names of four great dance artists who made Indian culture and dance tradition recognized across the world. He made it clear that he has raised this demand not for himself, but to honor those artists whose contribution to the Indian art world has been incomparable.
He said that many great musicians and singers in the country have been awarded Bharat Ratna. These include celebrities like Ustad Bismillah Khan and Lata Mangeshkar. But till now no dance artist has received this highest honour. Sonal Mansingh raised the question whether the contribution of veteran artists like Bala Saraswati, Rukmini Devi Arundale and Pandit Birju Maharaj was less than anyone else’s?
Dance and music should get equal respect
Sonal Mansingh said that even after almost eight decades of independence, it is a matter of concern that no dance artist is getting Bharat Ratna. He said that this sends the message that music is given more importance than dance, whereas both the arts have equal place in Indian tradition.
He emphasized that the role of dance artists has been very important in creating the identity of Indian culture and they should also be included in the category of the highest honor of the country.
Sonal Mansingh in news again with ‘Shri Ram Katha’

Has been honored with many big honors
