A tragic incident unfolded in Ohio's Scioto River, resulting in the deaths of five individuals during a rescue operation. This unfortunate event occurred on Sunday evening near the O'Shaughnessy Reservoir in Powell, a suburb located northwest of Columbus. According to Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer, a group had gathered by the river for leisure and fishing when one member decided to swim.
As the swimmer began to struggle, two others jumped in to assist. When they too faced difficulties, two additional individuals entered the water in a desperate attempt to save them. Around 9 PM, a passing motorist noticed a distressed young child running along a nearby road, seeking help. The driver promptly contacted emergency services after the child indicated that their family was in the river.
Rescue Efforts and Casualties Rescue Operation Ends With Five Fatalities
Emergency responders arrived swiftly and managed to recover two adult women from the river on Sunday. Unfortunately, they were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Search efforts continued throughout the night, leading to the recovery of three adult men on Monday, raising the total number of fatalities to five.
Authorities reported that two children, aged 6 and 7, who were part of the group, have been placed under the care of Delaware County family services. Sheriff Balzer mentioned that efforts are underway to inform the victims' relatives and to ascertain the relationships within the group, which may include two sets of parents, two children, and another individual.
Officials noted that there did not seem to be a significant undertow in that area of the river. The sheriff emphasized the importance of understanding one's swimming capabilities and the necessity of wearing life jackets, as they can be life-saving. The Delaware County Sheriff's Office is continuing its investigation, facing challenges due to the children's ages, the trauma they experienced, and a slight language barrier.
