The government of Nepal has given the green light for the production of newly designed coins, which will no longer feature the contentious map that included Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh, and Kalapani on the one-rupee coin. While Nepal asserts that Lipulekh and Kalapani are part of its territory, India claims these areas as its own. In May 2020, the then Prime Minister K P Oli's administration included these territories in Nepal's official map.

On Thursday, the Council of Ministers approved the minting of redesigned one-rupee and two-rupee coins by the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB). According to the cabinet's resolution, the new one-rupee coin will no longer display the controversial map but will instead feature an image of the Lo Ghyakar Monastery, located in Mustang's Marang village. This monastery is recognized as one of the oldest in Nepal.

In contrast, the two-rupee coin will continue to display the previously printed map. Senior leader of the Nepali Communist Party, Bhim Rawal, criticized the government's decision to remove the map from the one-rupee coin, labeling it a significant threat to Nepal's territorial integrity. He urged both the government and the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party to clarify their stance on this issue.

Rawal stated, 'If the government led by Prime Minister Balen Shah has indeed opted to eliminate the map of Nepal, including Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh, and Kalapani, from the one-rupee coin and replace it with the Lo Ghyakar Monastery image, it will be another serious anti-national decision and a setback for Nepal's territorial integrity.'

The Nepal Rastra Bank proposed the new designs to make the coins lighter and smaller, as explained by spokesperson Guru Prasad Paudel. He noted that the new political map could not fit on the smaller one-rupee coin. The reverse side of the two-rupee coin will feature the Janaki Temple. The new coins will weigh 3.2 grams for the one-rupee coin, down from 4 grams, and 3.8 grams for the two-rupee coin, reduced from 5 grams. Additionally, the coins will be made of steel instead of a mixed metal, and their color will change from yellow to steel white.
