Ravi Shastri, the former captain and head coach of India, has expressed his unwavering support for Rohit Sharma after the latter's remarkable innings in the third ODI against England at Lord's on July 19. Rohit scored an impressive 138 runs off 110 balls, hitting 17 fours and 5 sixes, achieving a strike rate of 125.45. Despite his efforts, India lost the match by 27 runs, resulting in a series defeat of 1-2. Notably, Rohit became the first Indian player to score an ODI century at this iconic venue.

This outstanding performance comes amid swirling rumors about his potential retirement, fueled by discussions within the BCCI regarding a squad transition. Rohit’s exceptional display at the 'Home of Cricket' effectively countered these speculations, showcasing his enduring talent and skill.

As retirement rumors gained traction before the ODI at Lord's, Rohit remained focused, allowing his performance to speak for itself. Shastri quickly came to Rohit's defense, urging the management to honor the legacy of a player who has dedicated nearly two decades to Indian cricket.

"He didn't need to prove himself, but he has silenced everyone. Such rumors can be frustrating. A player with his achievements shouldn't have to justify himself to anyone," Shastri remarked during an interview.

"If he still has the passion to play, is committed to improving his game, and enjoys it, he should be allowed to continue for as long as he wishes. He will know when it's time to step away," he added.

After retiring from T20Is in 2024 and Tests in 2025, Rohit is now concentrating solely on ODIs, with aspirations to extend his career until the 2027 World Cup, which will be hosted in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. His form had been questioned after scoring just 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs of the series against England, but he responded with a stellar performance at Lord's, proving his critics wrong.

Following his historic innings, Rohit addressed the ongoing retirement speculation, stating in a BCCI video that his primary focus is on contributing to the team's success. "My role is to play and represent my country. The external noise has always been there since my debut, and it will continue. What matters is my performance on the field," he said.

Since stepping away from Test cricket, Rohit has participated in every ODI series, including those against Australia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, and England, demonstrating his commitment to India's long-term plans for the 50-over format leading up to the 2027 World Cup. In his ODI career, he has accumulated 11,895 runs, featuring 34 centuries and 62 fifties, with an impressive average of 48.95 across 288 matches.
