Liverpool are reportedly weighing up a summer move for Roma’s midfielder Manu Koné, potentially setting the stage for a transfer battle with Manchester United. The 25-year-old has enhanced his reputation following France’s fourth-place finish at the 2026 World Cup.

Known for his strong tackling, physicality, and ability to carry the ball forward, Koné has become an appealing target for Premier League sides seeking to inject pace and energy into their midfield units.

As of 20 July, neither Liverpool nor Manchester United had submitted a formal bid, leaving Roma in full control of the transfer situation.

According to a report by Football Insider, Liverpool have now entered the race to sign Koné. The club’s scouts reportedly monitored his performances during the World Cup, and he has been shortlisted as part of new head coach Andoni Iraola’s plans to reshape the squad for the 2026–27 campaign.

Roma are believed to value the French midfielder at around €60 million, approximately £51 million. As reported by This Is Anfield, Atlético Madrid had previously tabled an offer of about £34 million, which Roma turned down.

Manchester United are also keeping a close eye on the situation. According to talkSPORT, the Red Devils have made an enquiry for Koné as manager Michael Carrick seeks another ball-carrying midfielder to complement recent signings Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.

Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has publicly expressed his desire to keep Koné in Italy. However, in an official Roma interview, he admitted that an exceptional offer could prompt the club to reconsider its stance.

For Koné, Liverpool may present a more defined sporting role. Iraola’s high-tempo system demands midfielders capable of recovering possession, covering large areas, and advancing the ball swiftly — attributes that align well with Koné’s skill set.

Although Koné is not a conventional holding midfielder, his main strength lies in breaking up opposition attacks and carrying the ball through pressure. Therefore, Liverpool would still need to ensure a solid defensive framework around him.

While Roma’s £51 million valuation is considerable, it remains justifiable for a 25-year-old international boasting experience in the Bundesliga, Serie A, and at World Cup level. The move would make strategic sense if Liverpool view him as a key starter rather than merely an expensive squad option.

Manchester United’s pursuit could push Liverpool into acting swiftly, though engaging in a bidding war would likely benefit Roma. A structured proposal with performance-based add-ons could represent the most prudent path forward.

Koné’s style and attributes could significantly strengthen Liverpool’s midfield, but the club would be wise to remain measured and avoid paying Roma’s full asking price at the outset.
