Speculation is mounting that Manchester United have entered the race to sign Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi, as the Colombian’s future ‘promises to be resolved’ soon, with Nottingham Forest continuing their pursuit.
Lucumi has long been on the radar of several clubs. Sunderland made a strong attempt to bring him in last summer and have again been associated with a renewed interest this year.
With just one year remaining on his Bologna contract, a number of clubs are keeping a close watch, viewing the situation as a potential opportunity to secure a quality player at a favourable price. Several Turkish sides have already made approaches for the centre-back.
Premier League outfits Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest have also reached out, though Lucumi has reportedly placed both clubs ‘on hold’ for the time being.
The player is believed to be waiting to see if offers emerge from other top sides, particularly after his performances at the World Cup enhanced his visibility. Juventus and Inter Milan are said to be among the possible destinations for the Colombian international.
However, there could now be another heavyweight entrant in the chase, with Manchester United reportedly showing interest. Should the Red Devils decide to act on this, it could significantly alter the dynamics of the transfer race.
According to Italian publication Il Resto del Carlino, whispers about Manchester United’s growing interest are ‘beginning to swirl’, and a move to Old Trafford is viewed as an attractive prospect for Lucumi.
With the conclusion of the World Cup, it is anticipated that ‘his situation promises to be resolved’ in the near future.
Lucumi’s Bologna contract previously included a release clause worth €28 million, which has now expired without any club activating it.
Expectations are that the defender could be available for a reduced fee, making the Colombia international a potentially astute signing for Manchester United.
Nevertheless, Lucumi is also thought to be open to remaining in Serie A, and if Inter Milan or Juventus make formal moves, they could quickly establish themselves as leading contenders for his signature.
For now, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth seem set to wait and observe whether Lucumi will be willing to reopen discussions if the offers he is anticipating fail to materialise in the coming weeks.
Bologna, meanwhile, are eager to see a swift resolution to the matter as they gear up for the new season.
