BSNL Fibre— Amidst the dominance of private companies in the Indian broadband market, the government telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has played a big bet. BSNL’s Fiber Basic Plus OTT plan with 100 Mbps speed has emerged as a big challenge for big companies like Jio and Airtel. Coming at a price of just ₹699 per month, this plan is directly beating the private players not only in terms of internet speed but also in terms of data limit.

Direct competition with Jio-Airtel: Big advantage of 4TB data

Usually, when you choose a 100 Mbps plan of Jio Fiber or Airtel Xstream, there is a limit of 3.3TB (3300GB) of data per month under the Fair Usage Policy (FUP). BSNL has made this weakness its weapon. BSNL is offering 4000GB (4TB) of data directly in its ₹699 plan, which is a full 700GB more than private operators. This means families with heavy downloading and continuous 4K streaming won’t have to worry about running out of data.

Even if a user uses the entire 4TB data in a month, the internet will not stop. After the FUP limit is reached, the speed will reduce to 4 Mbps, due to which basic browsing and messaging will continue without any interruption. Along with this, customers also get the facility of unlimited local and STD voice calls on any network, for which the user will have to purchase the landline instrument himself (GST will be added separately in the final bill as per rules).

Double dose of free OTT subscription

The second biggest feature of this plan is the entertainment benefits available with it. BSNL is offering customers the option of two different OTT packs, any one of which can be chosen as per their choice:

  • Pack 1: Under this, users get free access to JioHotstar, Hungama, Lionsgate Play, ShemarooMe and EpicON.
  • Pack 2: Those who prefer regional and premium content can choose this pack with free subscription to SonyLIV and ZEE5.

Strong hold in rural areas due to Bharatnet project

While Jio and Airtel are rapidly expanding their presence in cities, BSNL has established its presence in remote areas of the country and in every small and big city. The company is rapidly expanding high-speed internet infrastructure in rural areas of the country with the help of the government’s ambitious BharatNet project. Its direct benefit is getting to those consumers who live in Tier-3 cities or villages and who were not able to get reliable high-speed internet till now.

Statement from telecom experts
