If we look at the data, we find that more than 32,000 cases of dengue were reported in India in the year 2024. Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav had told the Lok Sabha that earlier in the year 2023, 18391 cases of dengue were reported.

In severe conditions, the risk of internal bleeding due to dengue also increases, which can also prove fatal. Amidst these dangers, a major achievement to dengue has come to light in India. Japanese pharmaceutical company Takeda Pharmaceutical’s dengue vaccine QDENGA has received approval from the Indian drug regulator. The special thing is that this is the first dengue vaccine to be approved in India. This is expected to start a new chapter in the field of dengue prevention.

According to reports, the most important thing about this vaccine is that it has been designed to provide protection against all four types of dengue virus. Also, before applying it, there will be no need to test whether the person has ever had dengue before or not.

This approval has come at a time when dengue cases have increased manifold in India during the last 20 years. Every year thousands of people fall prey to this disease and many patients even have to be hospitalized. Experts have been emphasizing the need for an effective vaccine for a long time. Takeda has also started preparations for large-scale production of this vaccine in collaboration with Indian company Biological-E.

Qudenga vaccine will provide protection from dengue

According to the company, QDENGA is a tetravalent live-attenuated vaccine. If understood in simple language, it means that this vaccine has been made to protect against all four types of dengue virus. In this, a weakened form of the virus is used, so that the body’s immune system can learn to recognize and fight the virus, but the disease does not occur.

The company says that this approval has come at a very important time in view of the increasing cases of dengue in India. According to available data, about 11 times increase in dengue cases has been recorded in India in the last two decades.

Takeda had partnered with Indian vaccine manufacturer Biological-E in the year 2024. Under this agreement, Biological-E will develop the capacity to produce approximately 5 crore (50 million) doses every year. This will help Takeda achieve its target of producing 10 crore (100 million) doses every year worldwide by the end of the decade.

Effective in preventing dengue

Dengue is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes, which has become a major public health challenge for many countries of the world today. According to the company, India alone accounts for about one-third of the total dengue cases in the world. Mahendra Nayak, head of Takeda’s intercontinental markets, said that since its launch in 2022, QDENGA has so far been approved in 43 countries and more than 32 million (32 million) doses have been distributed worldwide. Studies to the vaccine show that it has proven effective in providing long-term protection against dengue as well as reducing the risk of hospitalization due to dengue.
