The Argentina captain’s reaction came after Enzo Fernandez was shown a red card, prompting former England defender Lee Dixon to describe the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s behaviour as “ridiculous” during the intense encounter.

Messi protests for Cucurella’s dismissal

The World Cup final at MetLife Stadium was marred by controversy as tempers flared over several contentious refereeing decisions. Argentina went down to ten men when Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Pau Cubarsi.

Moments later, Marc Cucurella was involved in a heated confrontation with Lionel Messi. The Argentine skipper instantly appealed to the officials, appearing to demand disciplinary action against the Real Madrid full-back.

According to the 2026 World Cup regulations, players risk harsh penalties, including a red card, if they are caught covering their mouths while speaking to opponents. This rule had already led to Miguel Almiron’s expulsion earlier in the tournament, which sparked speculation that Messi was hoping Cucurella would face the same fate.

Dixon condemns Messi’s behaviour

The incident drew strong criticism from ITV co-commentator and former Arsenal full-back Lee Dixon. Speaking live during the broadcast, Dixon slammed Messi’s reaction and questioned why a player of his calibre would attempt to sway the referee’s decision.

“The game’s lost its way if players are being booked or sent off for that. Trying to get someone sent off is childish – don’t be such a baby, it’s ridiculous,” Dixon remarked.

Despite the heated exchanges, Spain ultimately lifted football’s most prestigious trophy with a narrow 1-0 win. Substitute Ferran Torres delivered the decisive strike in the 106th minute of extra time, securing La Roja’s second World Cup title.

After the final whistle, tensions reignited when Leandro Paredes clashed with Eric Garcia and Gavi, leading to the Boca Juniors midfielder being shown a red card by the referee.
