Christopher Nolan has once again captured fans’ attention after actor Matt Damon revealed the filmmaker’s unusual, old-school method of casting actors. The story has gone viral, with many praising Nolan for staying away from modern technology despite being one of Hollywood’s biggest directors.
Speaking in a recent interview, Damon shared that Nolan still does not own a mobile phone. Instead, the director’s wife and longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, first sends a text message to actors asking if they are available for a call. Nolan then phones them from a landline or an unrecognised studio number.
Damon recalled receiving a message from Thomas before Nolan personally called to discuss The Odyssey. At first, he assumed the director simply wanted to catch up after their work on Oppenheimer, but the conversation soon turned into an offer to play the lead role in Nolan’s latest epic.
The actor also revealed that Nolan does not write roles with specific actors in mind. Instead, he focuses on developing the story and characters first before deciding who would best fit each role. According to Damon, this creative approach allows the director to make casting decisions without preconceived ideas.
Nolan’s communication style has amused fans, especially in an era dominated by smartphones and instant messaging. Many social media users described his approach as refreshingly traditional, while others joked that receiving a mysterious call from an unknown number would be unforgettable.
The filmmaker is known for his preference for practical filmmaking techniques and minimal reliance on modern technology. His latest project, The Odyssey, reunites him with Damon following their previous collaborations on Interstellar and Oppenheimer.
