As the 2026 World Cup nears its conclusion, the ongoing transfer tussle involving FC Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, and Argentine striker Julián Álvarez has reignited. Both clubs, steadfast in their respective positions regarding the highly sought-after forward, have made their stances unmistakably clear in recent days.

Since being re-elected as president of the Catalan giants, Joan Laporta has repeatedly spoken about Barcelona’s ambition to sign Álvarez. Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid have been equally firm, insisting that they have no intention of letting go of the Argentina international.

Just a day earlier, Atlético Madrid CEO Gil Marín unequivocally stated that the club will not sell Álvarez at any price and intend to keep him as part of their plans for the 2026–27 season. The Atlético executive also took aim at Laporta’s involvement in the situation, criticising the Barcelona president’s approach.

According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, Laporta has now issued a measured response to Marín’s statements. Speaking at an event organised by the RFEF in the United States ahead of the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, the Barcelona president reaffirmed that the club had made a strong bid for Álvarez:

“We have submitted an offer. He is a player our coach wants, and that is why we made the offer to Atlético Madrid. It is a very significant offer for us, a very, very good one.”

Unlike Marín’s more combative tone, Laporta maintained a calm and respectful demeanour, emphasising the challenges major clubs face when a player expresses the desire to move elsewhere:

“I respect everyone’s opinion. I respect Miguel Ángel’s opinion and everyone else’s.”

“There have been so many cases where it was said that a player would never join Barça, and yet he ended up coming…”

“When a player wants to leave, Barça’s attitude as a club is that if a player wants to leave Barça, we will not stand in his way. A big club cannot afford to keep players who are unhappy.”

Laporta also made it clear that Barcelona’s current proposal has a time limit attached to it:

“It is not unlimited in time. We will give a reasonable deadline. I would say until the end of the month.”

“It is no longer just a matter of the offer being made. If there is also a good offer, it has to be taken.”

As the saga unfolds, all eyes will be on how the situation develops following the World Cup final. Álvarez is set to feature in Argentina’s clash with Spain tonight, and the days following the final are expected to be decisive in determining the trajectory of his club career.
