Administration alert after earthquake

Depth and center of the earthquake: According to seismologists, the center of this earthquake in Sarand was located at a depth of about 12 kilometers from the ground. Typically, earthquakes with shallower depths, such as 12 kilometres, create greater vibration and potential for damage at the surface.

earthquake statistics in iran

How serious Iran’s seismic situation is can be gauged from the data of the Institute of Geophysics of Tehran University. According to a recently released report, a total of 87 earthquakes were recorded in many parts of the country between June 20 and 26.

Statistically speaking, the intensity of 78 of these earthquakes was less than 3, while 9 earthquakes were between 3 to 4 intensity. Although no earthquake of magnitude greater than 4 had occurred during that week, the recent incident of magnitude 5.0 in Sarand has raised concerns.

2,380 earthquakes in Iran by March 2026

If we look at the data for one year, a total of 2,380 earthquakes of magnitude more than 2.5 occurred in Iran between March 2025 and March 2026. Of these, the intensity of 910 earthquakes was more than 3, the intensity of 130 earthquakes was more than 4 and the intensity of 15 earthquakes was more than 5. The Iranian Plateau is one of the most seismically active regions in the world.

Iran accounts for about 2 percent of all earthquakes in the entire world, but the sad part is that more than 6 percent of the total deaths due to earthquakes worldwide during the 20th century have been recorded in Iran alone.
