Kobbie Mainoo ruled out through injury before England’s World Cup clash with France in major setback for Manchester United

Kobbie Mainoo has been ruled out of England’s World Cup third-place play-off against France after sustaining an injury, dealing a major blow to both the Three Lions and Manchester United. The 21-year-old midfielder is set to leave the national team camp without featuring in any match during the tournament held in North America.

The Manchester United academy product was widely expected to play a role in the playoff, as head coach Thomas Tuchel planned to rotate his squad following their heartbreaking semi-final defeat to Argentina. However, Mainoo was ultimately forced to watch from the sidelines. The Football Association confirmed his absence in a brief official statement just before the team line-ups were announced, saying: “Kobbie Mainoo is ruled out of today’s matchday squad to face France due to injury.”

The setback comes at a harsh time for the youngster, who earned a place in the final 26-man squad ahead of several notable Premier League names. Tuchel made seven changes to his starting eleven for the bronze medal match, but Mainoo’s absence from the substitutes’ list stood out as one of the most significant omissions.

Despite being selected over Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, Mainoo’s debut on the world stage never materialised. He remained an unused substitute throughout the group stage matches against Croatia, Ghana and Panama, and also sat out the knockout wins over DR Congo, Mexico and Norway. Even during the semi-final loss to Argentina, the former England Under-21 star did not get his chance to step onto the pitch. As a result, he leaves the tournament without a single minute of play and will have to wait another four years for a potential World Cup debut.

At Old Trafford, Manchester United will be monitoring his condition closely as preparations continue for the 2026-27 Premier League season. The Red Devils suffered a 1-0 defeat to Wrexham in their first pre-season friendly earlier today, and the news of Mainoo’s injury adds to their worries. Manager Michael Carrick will be hoping the issue is not serious enough to disrupt the midfielder’s pre-season training. Mainoo featured 30 times for United last season, scoring once and providing three assists, establishing himself as a key figure in Carrick’s set-up.

Mainoo’s development has been remarkable, especially considering how he managed to win Carrick’s trust after being overlooked under former boss Ruben Amorim. His composure on the ball and ability to dictate play from deep have made him a favourite among United supporters, who view him as a cornerstone of the club’s midfield future.

Looking ahead, United’s Premier League campaign begins with a tough away fixture against Hull City on August 22. With just a month remaining before the season opener, Mainoo faces a race against time to regain full fitness and reclaim his spot in the starting lineup. The Red Devils will be eager to have him available, particularly with Manuel Ugarte sidelined through injury and Casemiro’s departure leaving gaps in midfield, despite the recent arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
