Arsenal’s key summer transfer target is set to move across London, in a development that will come as a major setback to Mikel Arteta’s plans.
The dynamic attacking midfielder, who is currently part of the England squad at the World Cup, had been widely expected to leave Aston Villa this summer. Arsenal had made him their primary transfer objective, aiming to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season.
However, according to Standard Sport, it is Chelsea who have won the race for his signature. The Blues, long-time admirers of Morgan Rogers, moved swiftly and decisively to secure the player’s commitment, effectively outmanoeuvring their north London rivals.
The transfer, valued at £117 million, will set a new record for the highest fee ever paid for an English player, surpassing the £116 million Manchester City agreed to pay for Elliot Anderson earlier in the same window.
Rogers’ arrival will also mark a new milestone for Chelsea, eclipsing their previous record signing of Enzo Fernandez, acquired for £107 million following the 2022 World Cup.
The 23-year-old is expected to sign a six-year contract with Chelsea, which includes an option for an additional year. This long-term commitment signals the club’s intent to build around him as part of their future project.
A naturally versatile No.10, Rogers is equally comfortable operating on either wing — a quality showcased during England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina on Wednesday, where he started on the left flank.
The forward’s future was always set to accelerate once England’s World Cup campaign concluded. The Three Lions are due to face France in the third-place play-off on Saturday evening in Miami, Florida, before returning to London.
Rogers enjoyed a standout 2025–26 season, scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists in 55 appearances across all competitions. His performances earned him the UEFA Europa League Player of the Season award, having both scored and assisted in Aston Villa’s 3-0 triumph over Freiburg in the Istanbul final last May.
The move represents an enormous profit for Aston Villa, who had signed Rogers two years earlier from Middlesbrough for a modest £8 million. His rapid development has now turned into one of the most lucrative sales in the club’s history.
This transfer also marks the second time this window that Arsenal have seen a major target opt for a rival, following Manchester City’s successful hijacking of their deal for Jeremy Monga.
Nevertheless, Arsenal have managed to make progress elsewhere, reaching an agreement to sign Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis. Standard Sport understands that a deal worth approximately £33.8 million is close to being finalised for the 24-year-old, who is expected to replace Leandro Trossard after his £15.3 million move to Besiktas earlier this week.
