Thomas Tuchel finds himself under mounting scrutiny following England’s World Cup semi-final loss, yet former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison insists the German should continue as head coach. Morrison argues that only Pep Guardiola would be a worthy replacement if the Football Association were ever to make a change, while the FA reportedly maintains its confidence in Tuchel.
Tuchel under fire following World Cup heartbreak
Tuchel’s position has come under pressure after England’s 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals. Anthony Gordon had given the Three Lions an early lead, but Argentina turned the match around with goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez. The England boss faced widespread criticism from former internationals for adopting a defensive approach after going 1-0 up. However, despite the backlash, the FA is said to be standing by Tuchel as he looks ahead to the next phase of his tenure.
Morrison defends Tuchel’s leadership
Former Premier League forward Clinton Morrison believes Tuchel remains the right person to lead England, despite growing public demand for change. Writing for FourFourTwo, Morrison emphasised that viable replacements are scarce.
“I still think Tuchel is the right man to lead England,” he wrote. “I know a lot of people are calling for him to be sacked, but if you’re going to sack him, who’s out there?”
Guardiola seen as the ultimate dream appointment
Although Morrison defended Tuchel, he acknowledged that one name could shift the discussion entirely — Pep Guardiola. Following Guardiola’s departure from Manchester City, speculation has intensified among fans dreaming of the Catalan tactician taking charge of England’s national team.
Morrison suggested that if the FA ever had the chance to appoint the multiple Premier League-winning manager, they should seize the opportunity immediately, regardless of Tuchel’s existing contract or the timing involved.
“A lot of people are saying Pep Guardiola. If Pep becomes available, you grab it with both hands because he is the special one. But I just don’t see the FA making a change right now,” Morrison added. “Zinedine Zidane’s name was mentioned, but it seems he’s heading to manage France after Didier Deschamps steps down. People were also talking about Jurgen Klopp, but he’s taking the Germany job.”
“So Pep is probably the one available if England decided to make a change. For now, England must prepare for that third-place play-off, which, to be honest, no one really wants to play. I don’t understand why it’s still part of the tournament—it’s meaningless in my opinion. Some players just want to go on holiday, recharge, and get ready for the new season.”
Focus turns to the third-place play-off
England are now gearing up for their third-place clash against France at Miami Stadium. Despite the lingering disappointment of missing the final, Tuchel and his squad are expected to deliver a strong performance and aim for a positive finish to their World Cup campaign.
