Manchester United’s pre-season campaign began on a contentious note as they went down 1-0 to Wrexham in Helsinki. The match, which saw the much-anticipated debut of £50 million signing Andrey Santos, concluded with loud boos from the crowd following a late penalty appeal that went unanswered.

Late controversy leaves fans irate

When the final whistle blew at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, the officiating team was met with a storm of boos from the 20,069 spectators following United’s opening defeat. The tension peaked in the closing moments when youngster Dan Gore appeared to be brought down inside the penalty box. Despite animated appeals from the players and supporters, the referee dismissed the claims, prompting a hostile reaction as the officials exited the field.

Although pre-season results in July seldom carry great consequence, the nature of this defeat will no doubt frustrate manager Michael Carrick. United had aimed for a positive start to their summer fixtures but ultimately fell short due to a lack of creativity and cutting edge. For the Hollywood-backed Wrexham, the win added another feather to their cap, following their 3-1 victory over a United side during the 2023 U.S. tour in San Diego.

Santos makes his first Manchester United appearance

The spotlight was firmly on Andrey Santos, the £50 million Brazilian midfielder making his maiden appearance for the club. The 22-year-old, brought in as part of a major midfield rebuild, endured a mixed outing on his debut after joining from Chelsea. Early in the game, he looked off the pace and lost possession twice in dangerous areas, but as the match progressed, he began to display the discipline and determination that Carrick will expect from him this season.

Santos’ addition comes during a transitional phase for United’s midfield, following the exit of Casemiro and a serious knee injury to Manuel Ugarte. Alongside fellow recruit Youri Tielemans, Santos is anticipated to be a key figure in the team’s new setup. His initial nervousness was evident when he engaged in a heated exchange with Wrexham forward Sam Smith, accusing him of overly aggressive play. Nevertheless, the Brazilian settled into his role as the side’s holding midfielder as the game went on.

Former academy player punishes United

In a storyline seemingly made for the cameras of "Welcome to Wrexham," it was a former Manchester United academy graduate who delivered the decisive blow. Sam Smith, released by United in 2014, came back to haunt his old club by scoring the only goal of the match. Taking advantage of a brief lapse in United’s defence, Smith found space at the far post to slot home a precise cross from Lewis O’Brien, ensuring victory for Phil Parkinson’s Championship side.

United’s senior players struggled to find a breakthrough against Wrexham’s organised defence. Mason Mount came closest to equalising in the first half when his curling corner nearly resulted in an own goal—Smith’s header rattled the crossbar. Apart from that moment, Carrick’s starting side failed to produce clear opportunities before he opted for wholesale changes at the interval.

Youthful second-half effort falls short

Following the usual pre-season approach, Carrick fielded an entirely new lineup for the second half, giving several Carrington academy graduates a chance to face an experienced Wrexham team. Led by Gore, the young Reds controlled possession for long stretches and showed composure against seasoned professionals such as Kieffer Moore and Conor Coady. Despite their dominance and neat build-up play, the youngsters lacked the incisive final pass to truly test Wrexham’s substitute goalkeeper, Danny Ward.
