France vs England preview and prediction for the 2026 World Cup third-place play-off

Saturday’s third-place play-off at the 2026 World Cup is the fixture neither side truly wanted, yet both France and England must face it regardless.

Both teams will dutifully speak about the importance of finishing third instead of fourth and playing every match with full commitment. However, the reality remains that this is a consolation prize neither side particularly desires.

The main spectacle of this World Cup will be Sunday’s final between Spain and Argentina. In contrast, the bronze medal play-off is unlikely to draw a large television audience, given the absence of real jeopardy.

France WIN - 5/6

Draw - 14/5

England WIN - 11/4

France, who lifted the World Cup in 2018 and reached the final again in 2022, saw their hopes of a third consecutive final appearance fade when they were convincingly beaten by Spain in the semi-final on Tuesday.

England, meanwhile, looked poised to reach the final when they led Argentina in the last ten minutes of Wednesday’s semi-final. However, their advantage slipped away as they eventually fell short.

In truth, for England to overcome this French side, they would need to perform at the absolute peak of their abilities—perhaps even beyond what they have shown so far. It’s the kind of performance they might have summoned in a final, but the motivation for this fixture will be harder to find.

Whatever the players say in the build-up, Saturday’s match in Miami is not the final, and both sides will know it. By kick-off, the intensity and urgency of a true final will be difficult to replicate. Teams rarely exceed expectations in such a scenario.

England, however, have a score to settle. Their last encounter with France came in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup, where France claimed a 2-1 victory on their path to that year’s final. In that match, England captain Harry Kane converted one penalty but missed another, a moment that still lingers in memory.

Kane’s pursuit of the Golden Boot may now be fading, but his French counterpart, Kylian Mbappe, remains level with Lionel Messi on eight goals. In addition, Mbappe sits just one behind Messi in the all-time World Cup goalscoring standings.

Mbappe is widely expected to surpass the Argentina captain’s record eventually, and a brace against England could see him temporarily take that crown.

For motivation, Mbappe need only look back to England’s first experience in a third-place play-off. In 1990, Italy defeated England courtesy of a late strike from Toto Schillaci, who secured the Golden Boot with his sixth goal of that tournament.
