Few footballers in FC Barcelona’s rich history have reached the heights that Lionel Messi has achieved. The Argentine legend, who remains a beloved figure for the Catalan giants, continues to shine on the global stage even at 39 years of age as he prepares to feature in his third FIFA World Cup final.

However, Messi’s pursuit of another World Cup title will face a major hurdle in the form of the Spanish national team, heavily influenced by Barcelona’s youthful core. Leading Spain’s charge is 19-year-old Lamine Yamal, whose extraordinary connection with Messi stretches back to his infancy.

One of the most remarkable aspects of their shared history is an iconic photograph taken when Messi was around 20 years old, and Yamal was just a baby. The image, captured as part of a UNICEF campaign where Messi was seen bathing the infant, has gone viral once again ahead of the World Cup final showdown between the two stars.

Before the final, Messi was asked about the photograph by NFL legend Tom Brady in a conversation shared and translated by DAZN. When questioned about what the image meant to him, Messi began by showering praise on Yamal:

“Well, Lamine is a fantastic player whom I’ve followed closely because he represents a club that I love deeply and always wish the best for. He’s already one of the world’s leading footballers at just 19 years old. He has his entire career ahead of him and a huge opportunity to make history — though we’ll do everything we can to ensure it doesn’t happen this time. I simply wish him all the best.”

Messi then turned his attention to the photograph itself, acknowledging how surreal it is to look back on now. He also underlined Yamal’s growing importance for both Barcelona and the sport as a whole:

“Honestly, that photo is crazy because, in my life, I took that picture with him when he was a baby, and today we’re facing each other in a World Cup. It’s truly unbelievable, but that’s how football is. He’s one of the best players in the world right now, without a doubt, and I wish him all the success because what’s good for him is also good for Barcelona.”

Messi concluded by noting that Argentina would do everything possible to limit Yamal’s influence, while also praising the overall quality of the Spanish side:

“We’ll try our hardest to play a strong game so he doesn’t produce his best performance, although that’s tough. We’ll prepare for both him and Spain, because it’s not just about Lamine — they have many top players. But we have our strengths too.”

For Barcelona supporters around the world, the Argentina vs Spain final represents a dream scenario. No matter who wins, either their greatest ever legend or the club’s current prodigy will lift football’s most prestigious trophy. Interestingly, several other Barça players have recently spoken highly of Messi, and the mutual respect between these generations of stars continues to be truly special to witness.
