Washington: Members of Hindu for Human Rights and the Azadi Project gathered at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi near the Indian Embassy on 17th July 2026, Friday, to express solidarity and extend support to climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi since 28th June 2026 over the NEET paper leak demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The activists in Washington carried placards in support of Wangchuk and and raised slogan against Narendra Modi led NDA government. The protesters in the US urged the Indian government to engage with Sonam Wangchuk and other protesters on hunger strike.
In an open letter to PM Modi earlier this week, Hindus for Human Rights said, “The government must meet with the protesters, provide a substantive response to the examination and governance failures they have identified, and establish a credible, time-bound process for accountability.”
Executive Director of Hindus for Human Rights, Sunita Viswanath, said that, “The government must meet the protesters now, answer the failures that brought them here, and act before indifference takes a life.”

Delhi Police has detained Sonam Wangchuk and taken him to the hospital, and also told other supporters to vacate the protest site this morning, 18th July 2026. This has created chaos; Several political leaders from different political parties have criticized this move by Delhi Police.
