As Argentina prepare for their World Cup final showdown with Spain, head coach Lionel Scaloni has chosen not to comment on Lionel Messi’s potential retirement from international football. Scaloni made it clear that only his captain knows whether he intends to continue playing for the national team beyond this tournament.
Scaloni has left the decision entirely in Messi’s hands as Argentina approach the highly anticipated final against Spain. Speaking at a press conference in New York City on Friday, the Argentina manager admitted he had no insight into Messi’s plans after the competition comes to an end.
The uncertainty surrounding Messi’s future persists despite another remarkable campaign from the 39-year-old icon. Messi has netted eight goals and provided four assists, sharing the lead in the Golden Boot race with France’s Kylian Mbappe. His outstanding performance also guided Argentina to a 2-1 semi-final victory over England, where he once again proved decisive.
When asked whether he expected Messi to continue representing Argentina after the World Cup, Scaloni refused to make any predictions. The coach, who led Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, emphasised that the decision rests solely with Messi.
“What do I know? Ask him,” Scaloni said with a laugh. “I honestly have no idea. He keeps surprising us every single time.”
Scaloni also took a moment to acknowledge the accomplishments of his players ahead of the final, expressing gratitude for their consistent achievements over recent years.
“It’s very difficult to achieve what they have done. They’ve reached levels that were once unimaginable. I told them yesterday that they had done something extraordinary and that I was deeply grateful,” he revealed.
“My entire coaching staff and I will always be thankful. It hasn’t been easy to reach this stage of the World Cup and compete at this level for so long. It’s truly wonderful. Of course, I hope we win, but even if we don’t, this journey has been incredible and serves as an inspiration for everyone. I hope it will bring pride to our people and our country.”
Argentina now stand one step away from yet another World Cup triumph as they face Spain in the final. Whether this will mark Messi’s farewell appearance for his nation or simply another chapter in his legendary career remains uncertain. Regardless, all eyes will be on the captain as he aims to guide Argentina to another historic victory.
