Chaturmas 2026: In Sanatan Dharma, Chaturmas is considered the time of bathing, charity, worship, chanting, penance and meditation etc. Doing these things leads to spiritual purification. At this time, Lord Shri Hari Vishnu, the sustainer of the world, goes into Yoga Nidra. This is considered the time of sleep of the gods. It is believed that the worship, chanting, penance and meditation done during Chaturmas gives the best results. Every year Chaturmas starts from the day of Devshayani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadha month.

It ends on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. It is believed that on this day Lord Vishnu wakes up from yoga nidra. This year Devshayani Ekadashi is on 25th July. Chaturmas will start on this day. Then Lord Vishnu will remain in Yoganidra for 120 days. He will wake up from yoga nidra on 20th November on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi. It is advised to stay away from worldly pleasures during Chaturmas. There are no marriages during this period. When Lord Vishnu rests, it is advised not to do any auspicious or auspicious work at that time. According to religious beliefs, doing any auspicious or auspicious work during this period is not auspicious. There is a complete ban on marriages during Chaturmas, but along with this, house warming, Mundan, Upanayan, Bhoomi Pujan, construction of new buildings, big auspicious ceremonies and other auspicious works are also avoided. Many people do not even buy valuable items at this time. This year all auspicious works will stop from 25th July and will start again from 20th November.

Religious activities provide special benefits

Religious activities do not stop during Chaturmas. On the contrary, Chaturmas has been described as the best time for meditation, restraint and devotion. According to the scriptures, during this time, special virtues of Bhagwat Katha, satsang, bhajan-kirtan, chanting, penance and charity are attained in temples. In religious texts, the four months of Chaturmas are considered a period of introspection, penance and spiritual progress. Sages and saints also stay at one place during Chaturmas and do penance, self-study and sermons.
