Delhi Police carried out a carefully coordinated operation early on Saturday to remove activist Sonam Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar, where he had been on an indefinite hunger strike for 20 days in support of protests over alleged examination irregularities.

The operation lasted only a few minutes and involved both uniformed and plainclothes personnel, who surrounded the protest stage before shifting Wangchuk to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital.

According to visuals from the protest site, police personnel arrived shortly after 7 am. While one group of officers moved directly towards the stage, another formed a human chain around it to stop protesters and volunteers from reaching Wangchuk.

The coordinated deployment limited movement around the stage as officers began clearing the protest venue.

One of the most striking aspects of the operation was the use of large white bedsheets. Police personnel stretched the sheets around Wangchuk, blocking the view of supporters and television cameras.

After creating the visual shield, officers lifted the activist from his bed using another white sheet and carried him to a waiting ambulance parked outside the protest site.

A brief scuffle broke out as some protesters attempted to stop the police action, but officers completed the operation within minutes.

Delhi Police said Wangchuk was shifted to hospital because of his deteriorating health and in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court.

The police said, “As per orders of Hon’ble High Court and on expert medical advise due to the deteriorating health condition of Sonam Wangchuk, he has been shifted to the hospital for essential medical care.”

The statement added, “While complying with the orders of Hon’ble High Court the protestors tried to create obstruction, in which slight commotion ensued, however police took maximum restrain and undertook the exercise safely.”

Police also appealed to protesters to leave the protest site peacefully.

Sources at Safdarjung Hospital said Wangchuk was admitted to the emergency ward after being brought from Jantar Mantar.

Hospital sources said, “He is conscious, and his vitals are stable.”

The police action followed the Delhi High Court’s direction asking authorities to ensure that Wangchuk receives medical treatment whenever doctors consider it necessary. Medical bulletins over the past few days had warned that the activist had lost more than 9 kg during his fast and that his condition was worsening.
