Neither the bat is working, nor age is helping… Why should Rohit Sharma retire?
Samira Vishwas | July 18, 2026 8:24 AM CST

Rohit Sharma can be seen for the last time in Team India’s jersey on Sunday (July 19). On this day, the last and decisive match of the 3-match series between India and England is to be played at the historic ground of Lord’s, which could be Rohit’s last international match. According to media reports, the selection committee has told Rohit that after the England series, youngsters will be given a chance in his place.

The selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar has recently spoken to Rohit as well as head coach Gautam Gambhir. The selection committee now wants to try young openers like Yashasvi Jaiswal. He has also informed Rohit that he is not a part of the 2027 World Cup plans. However, Rohit is not happy with this decision.

Rohit wants to play the next World Cup at any cost. He also talked to some BCCI officials during the England series. Rohit, who is 39 years old, has worked a lot on his fitness in recent times, so that he can fulfill his dream of winning the ODI World Cup, but perhaps now he may have to stop. It is difficult for him to go far from the stage of age he is in.

Rohit will enter his 41st year by the World Cup

Rohit cried bitterly after losing the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup in Ahmedabad. He has won everything in cricket. They just haven’t got the ODI World Cup trophy. Rohit wants to depart after winning this trophy but now age is not on his side. The next ODI World Cup is to be held in late 2027. By that time Rohit would have entered the age of 41 years. At this stage of age, the chances of a player playing the World Cup for a team like India are very less.

Runs are not coming from the bat this year

Rohit has been able to score only 241 runs in 8 ODI innings this year at an average of 30.12. His strike rate has also declined. He is able to score runs only at a strike rate of 88.60. In the current series against England, he has scored innings of 11 runs in 21 balls and 26 runs in 47 balls. He has never looked comfortable at the crease and it seems that he has lost his old touch. Let us tell you that this year only 1 half-century has come from his bat.

Rohit is unable to play in South Africa. The upcoming World Cup is to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Team India will play most of its matches in South Africa, where Rohit’s ODI record is very poor. He has been able to score only 256 runs in 13 ODI innings on South African soil at an average of 19.69 and strike rate of 68.44. Of these, he scored 115 runs in a single innings.
