Wayne Rooney says only Pep Guardiola could replace Thomas Tuchel as England boss

Wayne Rooney has stated that Thomas Tuchel should continue as England manager unless the Football Association (FA) can persuade Pep Guardiola to take charge.

An investigation is ongoing following England’s missed opportunity to reach only their second ever men’s World Cup final, after their semi-final defeat to long-time rivals Argentina.

Tuchel came under heavy criticism for his tactical decisions during Wednesday’s 2-1 loss, as England once again faltered on a major stage — a scenario reminiscent of their struggles under Sir Gareth Southgate.

According to reports, key figures within the FA continue to support Tuchel, who was granted a contract extension until 2028 earlier this year in February.

Former England captain Rooney believes Tuchel deserves to stay in the role unless Guardiola, the former Manchester City manager, becomes available — a coach the FA has previously held discussions with.

Speaking on the Wayne Rooney Show, he said, “I don’t see anyone else out there at the moment, unless you go and get Pep Guardiola. If Pep is available, then maybe you go and get him.

“I think he is a world-class manager, and what top managers do is they learn from their mistakes, improve, and become better.”

Rooney continued, “If we sack him, who are we going to bring in? I don’t think there’s anyone out there who’s as good as Thomas Tuchel, apart from Guardiola.”

He also pointed out Tuchel’s relative inexperience at international tournaments, saying, “But the big thing for me is that he’s not experienced at World Cups. We had the same with Fabio Capello. The World Cup is different — you need to feel that environment, and now he’s experienced it.”
