'Every call was spot on!' – John Barnes stands by Thomas Tuchel’s substitutions against Argentina as England legend challenges harsh criticism of the German coach

John Barnes has come out in defence of Thomas Tuchel’s tactical calls during England’s World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina, insisting that the German manager’s substitutions were entirely justified. The former Liverpool midfielder believes that much of the criticism directed at Tuchel overlooks both England’s current place in the world football hierarchy and the realities of knockout tournaments.

Barnes backs Tuchel’s tactical judgment

England’s dream of reaching their first World Cup final since 1966 ended when they allowed a 1-0 advantage to slip, ultimately losing 2-1 to Argentina. Late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez sealed victory for the South Americans. Despite the outcome, Barnes maintained that Tuchel handled the match appropriately.

He explained that England were never likely to dominate possession or outplay Argentina, arguing that maintaining their lead was the sensible strategy rather than making aggressive attacking changes. Barnes further emphasised that expectations should be in line with England’s world ranking, noting that the team’s performance in the tournament matched their current global standing.

Barnes dismisses criticism of Tuchel’s approach

Responding to backlash from several former England players who accused Tuchel of being overly cautious after England’s lead was overturned, Barnes defended the manager’s decisions.

“We were 1-0 up in a tournament where we’re never going to dominate possession or outplay anyone,” Barnes told Betfred. “We were 1-0 up, so why should we make attacking substitutions? If he had done that and we lost, people would be asking why he did it. He made exactly the right choices.”

He added, “It didn’t go wrong. We’re ranked number four in the world, so finishing third or fourth is where we should be. I don’t know why anyone expected something else.”

Barnes also praised Tuchel’s tactical identity, saying, “When you have a manager like Thomas Tuchel, you know what you’re getting — pragmatic, strong, disciplined, and resilient football. We’re not going to outplay teams, but we can beat them with our strength. Against Argentina, we went 1-0 up, and every decision Tuchel made was the right one. He reacted perfectly to what was happening on the pitch.”

Debate continues over England’s tactics

Barnes’ view stands in contrast to that of Wayne Rooney, who claimed that Tuchel’s defensive changes unsettled the England players. Gary Lineker also questioned the decision to drop deep and sit in a low block against Lionel Messi and Argentina.

The introduction of Nico O’Reilly and Dan Burn became a major talking point after the defeat. However, Barnes’ stance was supported by Andros Townsend, who described the substitution of O’Reilly as a smart tactical adjustment intended to restrict Messi’s influence in deeper areas late in the game.

Growing pressure on Tuchel

The defeat has increased the scrutiny surrounding Tuchel’s future as England manager. Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has already called for the German to step aside, while Eddie Howe and Pep Guardiola have been mentioned as potential replacements. Nevertheless, Tuchel has previously stated that he has no intention of resigning, and reports suggest that the Football Association continues to back him.
