FIFA to Present NFL-Style Championship Rings to 2026 World Cup Winners

FIFA has announced that the 2026 World Cup champions will receive NFL-style championship rings in addition to the traditional gold medals, marking a historic first for world football’s biggest tournament. Reflecting the culture of the host nations — Canada, Mexico, and the United States — this new initiative aims to infuse a distinctly North American flavour into the global event.

A landmark change in World Cup rewards

For the first time in the history of the competition, the winners of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be awarded championship rings. The governing body has chosen to adopt a tradition long associated with American sports leagues such as the NFL, NBA, and MLB.

While the iconic World Cup trophy and the customary gold medals will continue to form the highlight of the post-match celebrations, the introduction of these rings will offer players a personalised, lasting memento. This decision celebrates the tournament's return to North America for the first time since 1994.

Honouring North American sporting traditions

In the United States, championship rings have become synonymous with sporting greatness, representing the pinnacle of athletic success. By incorporating this tradition, FIFA is paying tribute to the cultural and sporting heritage of its 2026 hosts. These rings are known for their intricate craftsmanship, often adorned with precious stones and individually engraved with the names of each player.

"In a historic first for a FIFA tournament, the champions will also receive specially designed championship rings, bringing one of the most iconic symbols of American sport to the global football stage," stated a release on FIFA’s official website.

"Each ring will belong to a strictly limited collection of 2,026 individually numbered pieces, honouring the year of the tournament. Of these, 30 will be presented to the winning squad, while 1,996 will be made available to fans across the world as an Official Licensed Product, giving supporters an opportunity to own a unique piece of FIFA World Cup 2026 history."

"One side of each ring will feature the FIFA World Cup trophy, while the opposite side will be personalised to represent the identity of the victorious team. Every ring will be custom-fitted, individually numbered, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity."

Modernising the spirit of world football

This move forms part of FIFA’s broader strategy to make the 2026 edition of the World Cup its most innovative yet. Traditionally, World Cup winners’ medals are cherished but often stored away rather than displayed. The introduction of rings offers the players a wearable symbol of their triumph — something that can be proudly shown off in everyday life.

The statement further noted: "Right after the final, the captain and head coach of the winning team will be presented with temporary rings to mark the occasion. The 30 official rings for the champions will then be custom-designed before being formally handed over at a later date, ensuring the perfect fit for a legacy that will endure for generations."
