Weather Update: Another change in the weather is expected. The Meteorological Department has issued a fresh rainfall alert for several states across the country. Alerts have been issued for 20 states, including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Goa, and Jharkhand. There is also a possibility of hailstorms in some states. While residents of Delhi-NCR are grappling with oppressive, humid heat, heavy rains are wreaking havoc in Odisha and the northeastern states.
In its latest bulletin, the Meteorological Department stated that torrential rain is likely in isolated areas of Northeast India, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, UP, and the Western Himalayan region (the hilly states of North India) over the next seven days. Additionally, alerts have been issued for heavy rainfall in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on July 18 and 19. Rainfall activity is expected to remain subdued in West-Central and South Peninsular India over the next seven days, and in the plains of Northwest India over the next three days.
Rainfall Alerts for Specific States:
Regarding Eastern India, alerts have been issued for light rain in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on July 17–19 and July 23. Alerts are in place for Bihar (July 17 and July 22–23) and Odisha (July 19–23). Alerts have also been issued for Jharkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim (July 17–23), as well as for Bihar (July 18–21).
Furthermore, an alert has been issued for widespread heavy rainfall in Odisha on July 17–18. For Jharkhand, alerts have been issued regarding thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in isolated areas between July 17 and July 21. Warnings for thunderstorms and lightning have been issued for isolated areas in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim between July 18 and 23.
Rainfall warnings for Arunachal, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram
Regarding the weather in Northeast India, rainfall warnings have been issued for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya from July 17 to 20. Additionally, alerts for widespread rainfall have been issued for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from July 17 to 22. Warnings for thunderstorms and lightning strikes have also been issued for isolated areas in Assam and Meghalaya.
Heatwave alert for 19 districts in Tamil Nadu
Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in Odisha and the Northeastern states. In the south, a ‘Red Alert’ for heatwave conditions has been issued for 19 districts of Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, Karnataka is facing drought-like conditions due to a lack of rainfall.

According to the Meteorological Department, an alert for extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Odisha has been issued for today. Alerts for heavy rain and thunderstorms are in place for the Jammu, Poonch, Kulgam, Kathua, Muzaffarabad, Kishtwar, Anantnag, and Udhampur districts of Jammu & Kashmir. Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Simdega, Khunti, Dumka, Deoghar, Hazaribagh, Dhanbad, and Palamu in Jharkhand.

Heavy rainfall alerts have been issued for today in the Bihar districts of Gaya, Aurangabad, Siwan, Bhojpur, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, Patna, Kaimur, Buxar, Samastipur, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Purnia, Katihar, Kishanganj, and Bhagalpur. Cloudy skies are also expected in Delhi.
Risk of landslides in hilly areas
Heavy rainfall in the Western Himalayan region could raise river levels, and there is a risk of landslides in hilly areas. The monsoon is active across most parts of Maharashtra. Cloudy skies are forecast for Mumbai and the surrounding coastal areas.
