Donald Trump is scheduled to attend the FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, where he will present the trophy to the winning side alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The President of the United States has not been present at any of the 102 World Cup matches held so far across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, the White House has confirmed that he will be in attendance for Sunday’s final in New Jersey.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, “We look forward to the final match on Sunday, and I know the President looks forward to attending. This is a fitting conclusion to a tournament that has highlighted America’s capacity to host the world on such a grand stage.”
Trump’s most notable involvement in this World Cup occurred when he requested FIFA to “review” U.S. striker Folarin Balogun’s one-match suspension prior to the round-of-16 clash against Belgium. He later commended FIFA for “reversing a great injustice” when the ban was controversially lifted.
The move sparked political debate ahead of the knockout round, with Balogun later acknowledging that the incident caused considerable “distraction” and “controversy” as the co-hosts exited the competition following a 4-1 defeat.
Last summer, Trump presented the Club World Cup trophy after Chelsea’s victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the New Jersey final. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has now confirmed that Trump will once again take part in the trophy presentation ceremony at the World Cup final.
“Yes, hopefully we’ll present the trophy together in the final,” Infantino told Swiss broadcaster Blue Sport. “That has always been the plan, and it follows the tradition where the president of the host nation presents the trophy alongside the FIFA president.”
