Manchester United have officially completed the signing of Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans this week.
United have long held interest in the talented playmaker, first encountering him when they faced his former club Anderlecht in the 2017 UEFA Europa League quarter-final.
Following his time in Belgium, Tielemans moved to AS Monaco before making a loan switch to Leicester City in 2018.
Although the midfielder was again linked with a transfer to Old Trafford, he eventually made his move to Leicester permanent, where he went on to become a key figure for the Foxes.
After amassing 195 appearances for Leicester City, Tielemans joined Aston Villa in 2023. Over the course of three seasons, he represented the Villans in 134 matches, continuing to impress in the Premier League.
New United recruits Andrey Santos and Tielemans have both spoken about the appeal of working under Michael Carrick, who enjoyed a distinguished career as a midfielder for the club and now serves as part of the coaching staff.
However, Tielemans also highlighted another influential figure within the Manchester United coaching team who has played a meaningful role in his career.
Jonny Evans, who joined United’s backroom staff alongside Carrick in January this year, spent five years at Leicester City between 2018 and 2023. During that period, he and Tielemans were teammates for four seasons.
Speaking in an interview with the club’s official website, Tielemans shared his admiration for the former Northern Ireland international.
The midfielder said, “Jonny has been a big influence. I think he spoke with the manager about my character and my personality.”
He added further, “He’s been a big influence and I’ve always kept in touch with Jonny. He’s such a great guy.”
Having led Belgium as captain during the recent World Cup, Tielemans will now take a well-deserved break before returning to Manchester United’s pre-season preparations ahead of the 2026–27 Premier League campaign.
The Red Devils begin their league season on 22 August, travelling away to newly promoted Hull City, where Tielemans will be eager to make his competitive debut for the club.
