New Delhi: Iran has claimed that it destroyed several US military aircraft in Jordan through ballistic missile and drone strikes. The alleged attack came after the United States struck several locations across Iran overnight.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Aerospace Force said it carried out the strikes in two waves under the 14th phase of “Operation Nasr 2”. According to the IRGC, the operation targeted US fighter jets and aerial refuelling aircraft stationed at bases in Jordan.
Iran claims heavy damageThe IRGC said the attack destroyed several American fighter jets and tanker aircraft. It also claimed that other aircraft suffered major damage.
“The attack involved several ballistic missiles and numerous drones and resulted in the destruction of several American tankers and fighter jets and serious damage to many more of them,” the IRGC said in the statement.
The United States did not immediately confirm the attack or report any damage to its aircraft. Independent sources also could not verify Iran’s claims.
Retaliation for US strikesIran described the operation as retaliation for the latest US attacks on several sites inside the country. Iranian authorities said at least eight people died in the overnight strikes.
The development came shortly after Jordan’s military said it intercepted three Iranian missiles over its territory. According to Jordan, the missiles caused no casualties or property damage.
In its statement, the IRGC also urged Jordanian citizens to attack what it called “the interests of the aggressive and anti-Islamic Americans” in the country.
US expands campaignEarlier, the United States expanded its attacks against Iran and targeted bridges. The strikes followed US President Donald Trump’s threat to hit critical infrastructure to pressure Tehran to reduce its control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran responded with fresh missile attacks against several US-allied countries in the Middle East. These included Qatar, which has served as an important mediator during the conflict.
Ceasefire breaks downA temporary ceasefire reached last month has collapsed. The United States and Iran have since exchanged attacks for several days as tensions over the Strait of Hormuz rise. Iranian authorities claimed that US strikes have killed more than 35 people and injured over 300 so far. They also reported more casualties after the latest attacks on Friday.
