Kanpur. After the implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between India and the United Kingdom (UK), there is an atmosphere of enthusiasm among the country’s exporters, especially in the leather and footwear industry. Industry experts believe that this agreement will give a new identity to Indian products in the global market and will also give a new impetus to exports.
On this occasion, at a program organized by the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) at Vanijya Bhawan, officials and exporters welcomed the agreement and described it as an important achievement for the Indian industry.
Duty-free access will increase competition
It was told in the program that after the implementation of CETA, up to 16 percent import duty on leather and footwear products will be abolished and reduced to zero. Also, Indian products will get immediate duty-free access to 99 percent of UK tariff lines.
This will provide an opportunity to Indian exporters to compete on par with countries that already enjoyed special trading facilities in the UK market.
There will be a big increase in exports
According to the information, leather and footwear products worth US $ 419.67 million were exported from India to the United Kingdom in the financial year 2025-26.
The Council for Leather Exports estimates that improved market access, increased competitiveness and strong buyer confidence could lead to additional exports of up to US$1 billion over the next three years.
‘Brand India’ will get strength
Council for Leather Exports Vice Chairman Mukhtarul Amin said that this agreement is the beginning of a new era for the Indian leather and footwear industry. According to him, this will strengthen ‘Brand India’ globally, increase buyer confidence and create new business opportunities for MSMEs and manufacturing clusters across the country.
He expressed hope that on the basis of quality, innovation and sustainable production, India will establish a strong presence in the UK premium market in the coming years.
