Union Nation (UN). Today i.e. on 17th July, a very painful and major marine accident has been witnessed in the Bay of Bengal. Due to bad weather here, two boats carrying Rohingya refugees have sunk in water. According to a joint statement issued by the two main organizations of the United Nations, ‘International Organization for Migration’ and ‘United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’, more than 500 people are estimated to have died by drowning in this accident. According to the information received, both the boats had left from Myanmar’s western Rakhine province in the last week of June. Most of the people aboard these boats belonged to Myanmar’s persecuted Rohingya community. Some people had left the crowded refugee camps of Bangladesh in search of a safe haven.

Bad weather and overloading became the reason
According to sources, there were about 250 people on board the first boat, which went missing shortly after leaving Myanmar’s Rakhine coast. After this, on July 8, the second boat carrying about 280 passengers completely sank due to a severe storm and bad weather in the sea near the Irrawaddy coast of Myanmar. Experts say that due to overloading and lack of safety equipment, the boats could not withstand the high waves of the sea.
The world’s most dangerous sea route
Let us tell you that UN agencies have expressed deep sorrow over this incident and said that this area of Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal has become the most deadly sea route for refugees and migrants. Fed up with the violence in Myanmar and the poor conditions of the refugee camps in Bangladesh, thousands of Rohingyas risk their lives every year and leave by boat to seek refuge in countries like Malaysia or Indonesia.

However, due to inaccessible conditions and communication breakdown, the exact number of casualties has not yet been officially confirmed. But the UN has expressed fear that almost all the people on board the boat have died. Apart from this, after this tragedy, human rights organizations have appealed to the South-East Asian countries to conduct immediate search and rescue operations for the migrants stranded at sea.
