**9,911 MBBS Seats Added by the NMC**
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the MBBS seat matrix. This year, 9,911 MBBS seats have been added in India, bringing the total count to 136,939.

**Increase in Government Seats; Total Reaches 63,296**
According to the NMC's new seat matrix, 2,111 new government seats have been added, raising the total number of government seats to 63,296.

**Approval for 25 New Colleges for the 2026-27 Session**
The NMC has approved 25 new medical colleges for the 2026-27 academic session, significantly expanding admission opportunities. This includes the addition of 400 MBBS seats across seven new government medical colleges and 2,000 MBBS seats across eighteen new private medical colleges. With these additions, the total number of medical colleges in India has reached 823, comprising 441 government and 382 private institutions.

**Karnataka Has the Highest Number of MBBS Seats**
Currently, Karnataka offers the highest number of MBBS seats. According to the National Medical Commission (NMC) state-wise seat matrix, the states with the highest number of seats are as follows:

Karnataka: 15,395
Uttar Pradesh: 14,000
Tamil Nadu: 13,999
Maharashtra: 13,099
Telangana: 10,250
Andhra Pradesh: 7,465
Bihar: 4,160
Delhi: 1,415

Rapid expansion over the last decade
A significant increase in the number of medical colleges in India has been observed over the past decade. There were 387 medical colleges during the 2013-14 session; this figure rose to 706 in 2023-24 and 766 in 2024-25, and has now reached 823. The total number of seats increased from 1,08,940 in 2023-24 to 1,15,812 in 2024-25, and has now reached a record 1,36,939 for the 2026-27 academic session.
