New Delhi : Indian RailwaysA new green era is starting today in the history of There will be no noise or smoke on the railroads, the speed of a clean future will be seen. India’s first train powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology is all set to hit the tracks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the train from Jind railway station in Haryana on Friday. The train will initially run between Jind and Sonepat railway stations.

Unlike conventional electric or diesel engines, the train is based on hydrogen fuel cell technology. In this process, hydrogen is converted into electricity, which propels the train forward. The process produces no carbon emissions and produces only water vapor as a by-product. According to the Railways, the train generates its own energy. It generates electricity by reacting oxygen in the air with hydrogen, which avoids burning fuel and requires no external power supply.

Meanwhile, hydrogen-powered passenger trains around the world are still in their infancy. Germany was the first country to commercially launch such cars, while countries like France, Italy, China and Japan are also working on the technology. While most hydrogen trains running in these countries have two to four coaches, Indian Railways has developed a 10-coach passenger train with a capacity of around 2600 passengers.

Equipped with modern security system

The hydrogen train is equipped with a multi-layered safety system. The system is capable of detecting hydrogen leaks, excess heat, flames and smoke. According to the Railways, the train, equipped with clean energy technology, will provide a new eco-friendly mode of transport. On the Jind-Sonepat route, the train will run at an operational speed of 75 kmph and a design speed of 110 kmph. It will be one of the fastest passenger services on this route of about 89 km.

This train will connect Jind Junction, Gohana Junction and Sonepat on Jind Sonepat section of Northern Railway. This train will stop at several major and minor stations along the route. Based on the experience gained from this project, Indian Railways is exploring the possibility of using hydrogen technology on legacy railway lines like Kalka-Shimla in future. Railways believes that this initiative can be a significant step towards a clean and sustainable transport system in the country.
