Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has delivered a fresh warning to La Liga rivals Barcelona this week, as the Catalan giants continue their pursuit of forward Julián Alvarez.
Throughout the summer, Barcelona have made it clear that Alvarez is their top transfer target for the upcoming season. The Argentine striker has been identified as the ideal candidate to strengthen Hansi Flick’s attacking options, particularly as the club looks for a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
Last month, Barcelona submitted an official proposal for Alvarez, reportedly valued at around €100 million. However, Atlético Madrid’s hierarchy at the Estadio Metropolitano swiftly rejected the offer.
This week, Atlético’s management has once again reiterated its firm stance regarding the future of their prolific forward. Speaking to the media on Thursday, as quoted by journalist Fabrizio Romano, club president Enrique Cerezo made his position unmistakably clear.
“Joan Laporta is a good friend and he already knows where Julián Alvarez is going to play next season. Let me insist: Julián is our player and will be our player next season,” Cerezo stated.
His comments underline Atlético’s determination to keep hold of their star striker, despite Barcelona’s ongoing interest and efforts to secure a marquee signing ahead of the new campaign.
The statement sends a strong message that Atlético Madrid intend to retain Alvarez as a key part of their squad, refusing to bow to pressure from their domestic rivals.
