Manchester United’s ongoing midfield overhaul has already seen the club secure two Premier League-proven signings this summer.
The Red Devils first completed the acquisition of Andrey Santos from Chelsea for an initial £48 million — a deal that has reportedly pleased INEOS. Soon after, United finalised a move for Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans in what was described as another clever piece of business.
Both Santos and Tielemans bring versatility to the squad, with the ability to perform either as defensive midfielders or in a double pivot role, providing tactical flexibility to the team.
The club’s next target is believed to be a physically dominant midfielder capable of covering significant ground and offering solid protection to the backline.
Carlos Baleba has been shortlisted as a possible candidate, but Brighton & Hove Albion’s steep valuation has complicated negotiations.
As a result, United are now exploring options outside the Premier League, with AS Roma’s Manu Kone emerging as a leading target for the 20-time English champions.
The French international’s standout performances at the World Cup have further boosted his reputation, prompting Roma to raise his asking price from £43 million to £51 million. This marks the second price increase within a matter of weeks.
Roma’s confidence stems from strong interest across the Premier League, as journalist Eleonora Trotta of Corriere dello Sport has revealed that Liverpool and Arsenal have also made enquiries regarding the 25-year-old midfielder.
“Roma are actively working to facilitate a transfer for Manu Kone, with the player instructing his representatives in France to identify potential clubs,” Trotta reported.
“His agents have been in touch with multiple teams as they assess moves that would represent a step up in his career while improving his earnings.
“Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal have all made enquiries. Although no club has yet emerged as a clear favourite, Kone remains high on the shortlist of several Premier League sides closely tracking him.
“Manchester United are understood to have made the most progress so far, but it remains uncertain whether other interested parties will intensify their pursuit. Roma, meanwhile, are open to negotiating a sale, but only under their own conditions. They are unwilling to sanction a deal below their valuation and will only proceed if their financial expectations are met.”
Reports from The Peoples Person have indicated that United might not be prepared to spend excessively on a third midfield signing, lending weight to speculation about a possible move for Sander Berge.
However, potential player departures could create room for a bid for Manu Kone. It remains to be seen whether Roma are leveraging interest from United’s Premier League rivals to drive up the price — and whether that will prompt a response from INEOS.
